The United Kingdom Prospective Diabetes Study early results data suggested metformin conferred greater cardiovascular benefits to the overweight diabetes participants than dietary interventions alone. All of the following were observed for the metformin group EXCEPT:

Answer: D. An overall mean A1c reduction of 1.5%

Educational Critique: Overall, participants in this study who received metformin, as opposed to only dietary interventions, had significantly fewer MIs, all-cause and diabetes related death events. However, the overall mean A1C reduction was only 0.6%. Subsequent follow-up of this cohort demonstrated that A1C differences were lost after the first year of follow-up. At the 10-year follow-up, relative risk reductions, while lower, were still significant. UKPDS Study Results
