Laura Shane-McWhorter, PharmD, BCPS, FASCP, CDE, BC-ADM, is currently a professor (clinical) at the University of Utah College of Pharmacy, Department of Pharmacotherapy. Her educational background includes: Residency, Salt Lake City ASHP Post-Doctoral Residency VA Medical Center in Geriatric Pharmacy; University of Utah, Doctor of Pharmacy; Residency in Clinical Pharmacy, University of Utah, Health Sciences Center; University of Utah, Bachelor of Science, Pharmacy; East Texas State University, Master of Science, Biology/Chemistry; and University of Texas at Austin, Bachelor of Arts, Psychology/Chemistry.
Her clinical practice involves provision of pharmacotherapy consult services to health care providers at primary care clinics with specific areas including diabetes care, hypertension and hyperlipidemia, and psychiatric medicines. Her patient care services include providing education both in English and Spanish to underserved patients at Community Health Centers. Professor Shane-McWhorter’s research interests include diabetes education and provision of diabetes services by pharmacists and further areas of interest include prescribing practices by different health care providers as well as use of conventional and complementary therapies by patients.
She is also the author of the American Diabetes Association’s Complementary and Alternative Medicine (CAM) Supplement Use in People with Diabetes: A Clinician’s Guide, and the American Diabetes Association Guide to Herbs and Nutritional Supplements: What You Need to Know from Aloe to Zinc.
