As of my last update in September 2021, there is evidence to suggest that COVID-19 may be associated with an increased risk of developing diabetes, particularly type 2 diabetes. However, it is important to note that the relationship between COVID-19 and diabetes is complex and continues to be an area of active research.

1. Acute Hyperglycemia: During the acute phase of a COVID-19 infection, some patients may experience transient hyperglycemia (high blood sugar levels). This is especially common in individuals with pre-existing diabetes or those who develop stress-induced hyperglycemia due to the severity of the illness.

 

2. New-Onset Diabetes: Some studies have reported cases of new-onset diabetes in individuals who were previously healthy but developed diabetes after contracting COVID-19. It is hypothesized that the virus may directly affect the pancreas, which is responsible for insulin production, leading to temporary or permanent impairment of insulin secretion.

3. Autoimmune Response: COVID-19 is known to trigger an immune response, and in some cases, this immune response can lead to autoimmune reactions. Autoimmune reactions can potentially attack and damage insulin-producing beta cells in the pancreas, resulting in type 1 diabetes or a condition known as “latent autoimmune diabetes in adults” (LADA).

4. Long COVID and Metabolic Changes: Some individuals who have recovered from COVID-19 may experience lingering symptoms and complications known as “long COVID.” There have been reports of metabolic changes and insulin resistance in some long COVID patients, which can contribute to the development of diabetes or worsen existing diabetes.

Most people who experience transient hyperglycemia during the acute infection will return to normal blood sugar levels after recovery.

3. Monitor Blood Sugar Levels: Individuals who have recovered from COVID-19 should monitor their blood sugar levels regularly, especially if they experienced hyperglycemia during their illness.

4. Seek Medical Attention: If individuals notice any concerning symptoms or have a family history of diabetes, they should seek medical attention for appropriate evaluation and management.
