Teresa Pearson, RN: How Does Pay-for-Performance Work?

Teresa Pearson, RN, CDE, talks about how pay-for-performance has worked in Minnesota, commenting that, initially, many providers were skeptical, but that it is now clear that the system does impact diabetes care for the better. This change, along with the introduction of medical homes Pearson believes, will result in a gradual shift towards more prevention-focused care, also resulting in better use of existing skillsets among medical personnell, and new roles, such as lifestyle coaches, to be filled. And, she reports, after initial resistance to the idea of a medical home, patients love the idea, partly because it takes the burden of coordinating all of their different medical care needs into one place….
