We were empowered by Unomedical to recruit 100 patients for a usage and feedback study on the new inset™ 30 insulin infusion set for luer lock type insulin pump set patients (this excluded the Medtronic Paradigm family of pumps).

This report is prepared on the basis of 89 respondents, 47 of which used the straight or 90 degree sets and 42 who have been using shallow angle(commonly referred to as 30 degree) sets.

Overall response to the sets was very positive.

Those who used the set the felt that they lasted the full 3days and if the patients who did not discontinue early are separated out then over 8 of every 10 sets lasted the expected 3 days.

Overall patients did not have a problem inserting the set. There was just slightly more than 1 failure per 10 sets used and in most cases this was the first set. In fact only 8 of the patients had more than 1 failure. This may be reflected by the fact that patients were able to attempt to place the set in areas that were new to them. This is especially seen in patients who were using hand inserted shallow angle sets as they could now reach areas untried before.

All patients felt positive about the ease of both insertion and use of the set. In fact the average comment as indicated by the survey shows that patients felt that all features were easy to use overall. The factors that were rated most important to the patient were given a positive response by the majority of patients. Out of the 89 total respondents only a maximum of 13 on any single question had a response of moderately hard or hard and if you average all responses from questions 3 and 4 you find that there was only an average 5.3 responses of moderately hard or hard and if you subtract those who discontinued use early then the average response drops to only 3.8 per question.

It is interesting to note that patients who had used straight angle sets previously had a slightly higher failure rate with the first set. This can be due to their inexperience with how shallow angle sets are to be positioned but one they had figured this out their overall responses were similar to patients who had been using shallow angle sets all along.

When we look at impressions that the patient was left with after the study we find that most are very positive. Questions 5-8 indicate that patients were generally very happy with the inset30. Questions 9 indicates that for the most part patients were okay with the size but of all participants there were 17 who felt that the size was to big and these were hand inserters of other sets.

Question 10 indicates that most patients have feel that color is not important but as seen with the Inset kids prefer color more than adults. Questions 11-13 address the instruction sheets and although the impression was positive overall there were some individual comments concerning difficulty.

As was seen in the Inset and Inset2 studies, patients again had a concern about the waste. They tended to feel that there was to much waste but interestingly did not feel that was important enough to not chose to use the set.

When we looked at the all important question of whether they would use it instead of their current set a total of 32 patients stated they would change completely and another 26 indicated that they would use as a compliment. 65% of all patients involved would consider using this set at times. In the patients that had been using shallow angle sets the % jumps to 71. In trying to identify the reasons that patients would not switch I found that the majority of patients who would not switch were straight angle set users. These patients did find the Inset30 very usable and very few selected a reason that was very relevant to their decision. The biggest reasons not to change were that they were very happy with their current sets or had gotten very comfortable inserting their own set manually.

As someone who works with pump patients every day I have seen how the original Inset has had such an impact on the pump population and how as companies started to ship the set with new pumps that the user numbers have grown. I believe the inset™ 30 will have the same growth usage curve. I know that for many of my patients, the new Inset 30 will be a great choice and I am asking that they order both the Inset and Inset30 for use.
