Subjective Cognitive Decline

May 20, 2017

What proportion of Americans age 45 and older have self-reported memory problems?

Answer: 3. 1 in 9

Explanation: According to the 2015 Behavioral Risk Factor Surveillance System (BRFSS), 1 in 9 Americans age 45 and older describe worsening memory problems, but only 44.5% of these have sought medical help. More than 40% of those who self-report memory problems say they've given up daily activities because of their symptoms. Subjective cognitive decline may be an early indicator of Alzheimer's disease.
