Positive Results with Novo Nordisk A/S Long-Acting GLP-1 Analog and Gastrin Comb

Combination brings back normal blood glucose levels by increasing beta-cell mass.

Transition Therapeutics Inc. announced that in a three week study using a type 1 diabetic animal model, daily doses off the combination of liraglutide and Transition’s gastrin analogue, G1, were able to return diabetic mice to normal blood-glucose levels and achieve a several-fold increase in both the pancreatic insulin content and beta cell mass. The addition of gastrin, G1, potentiated liraglutide effects.

"These findings demonstrate the potential use of a long-acting GLP-1 analogue and gastrin to stimulate islet cell regeneration and expand the use of GLP-1 therapy to insulin-dependent diabetes patients." said Dr. Tony Cruz,chairman and CEO of Transition.

An oral presentation entitled, "Liraglutide, a Long-Acting GLP-1 Analog, restores Pancreatic Beta-Cell Mass and Corrects Hyperglycemia after Diabetes Onset in NOD mice: Gastrin Potentiates Liraglutide Effects" was given by Dr.Alex Rabinovitch, the Co-Director of the Muttart Diabetes Research and Training Centre at the University of Alberta. Dr. Rabinovitch and his colleagues compared the treatment effects of liraglutide alone, gastrin alone and the combination of liraglutide and gastrin in a standard animal model for type 1 diabetes.

In August 2004, Transition Exclusively licensed GLP1-Gastrin combination therapy I.N.T.(TM)to Novo Nordisk A/S.

Transition Therapy has received clearance to commence exploratory Phase IIa clinical trials to evaluate efficacy, safety, and tolerability of E1-I.N.T.(TM) in both type I and type II diabetes patients.

The new finding was announced at the 65th annual scientific meeting of the American Diabetes Association.
