Editor's Note
For years the crux of diabetes care for type 2’s has been to reduce the amount of glucose going in and the amount of glucose being absorbed. We put patients on carbohydrate-restricted diets, have them take fiber before a meal, and use medicines such as acarbose. For the most part these methods fail because high sugar, high carb foods just taste too darn good.
We have been using the SGLT-2 Inhibitors for the past 3 years with great success. Part of the reason these seem to work well is that rather than forcing the patient to watch carb intake, these medications remove glucose from the bloodstream and our patients basically “pee their way to a good A1C.”
The great thing about this class is: further studies have shown that these medications can affect blood pressure positively, and now recent studies even go as far as proving that the use of drugs in this class can reduce cardiac risk and death.
Our special edition has the latest data on the results of these studies, and includes how this indication may change prescribing habits for patients for years to come.
