Many years ago when I first got into diabetes care there was constant pushback on the idea of a pharmacist managing diabetes patients. The idea that a pharmacist could actually do pump trainings was unheard of. I thought we Pharmacists would be a natural choice because of our drug knowledge, but every pump company at the time had a different idea.

There were a couple of pump representatives who were willing to take a chance and gave me a chance to actually work with patients. One of them was Tony Galliani, my local Animas rep, and with his help I was able to prove that Pharmacists could indeed manage patients who use insulin pumps.

This week I am happy to share an interview that our publisher, Steve Freed, did with Tony as he describes the new InPen insulin delivery system, and how this may be the best simple solution for recording insulin dosing and never missing another dose.

As we know, the holidays are very tough for many of our patients who have diabetes and/or obesity. They may have made some changes — big changes — in their eating habits, only to get in trouble over the long holiday season, then have a very difficult time getting back on track. The long holiday season can be a disaster to their health.

Renal cysts and diabetes (RCAD) syndrome: HNF1B-MODY

Molecular genetics of RCAD
HNF1B is a transcription factor with a role in regulating gene expression in a number of tissues. HNF1B forms homo and heterodimers with HNF1A, is present in similar tissues although at different levels, and binds to the same DNA consensus sequence. Despite these similarities HNF1B mutations cause diabetes by a different mechanism and have a distinct phenotype. There is autosomal dominant inheritance, although up to 50% of cases arise from de novo mutations or deletions.

Free potential treatment lowers blood sugars, helps with weight loss, drops blood pressure and cholesterol, and may add at least 10 years of quality of life.

Although there are no guidelines for LADA, prescribers should take a closer look at their patients before diagnosing T2D.
