Now that we are in the new year our patients will have every good intention on changing everything to make this their best and healthiest year ever. They will try a new exercise program and a new diet. They will swear they will take their medications and fix their glucose, hypertension and cholesterol values.

Making progress with hypertension and diabetes has been made easier with recent addition of be medications, but when it came to cholesterol until the advent of the PCSK9 Inhibitors there was not much in the way of new help.

In part 1 of this Exclusive Interview, Dr. Ray Kausik talks with Diabetes in Control Publisher Steve Freed during the ADA 2017 convention in San Diego, California about his work targeting PCSK9 with RNA interference to see how that impacts on lipids and clinical outcomes.

The role of statins in the primary and secondary prevention of CVD has been well established. Patients with NAFLD are believed to have increased cardiovascular risk and are logical candidates for their long-term use. In accordance with their higher cardiovascular risk, the use of statins should be encouraged in patients with NAFLD but their use has remained controversial in such patients, particularly in the setting of elevated liver enzymes. Recent practice guidelines on statin use in patients with NAFLD have clearly established that they are overall safe and that they do not carry a higher risk of liver toxicity.
