A new test, called the BIGTT test, simultaneously measures pancreatic beta-cell function, insulin sensitivity, and glucose tolerance. "These models give important and quite precise information on beta-cell function and insulin sensitivity among glucose tolerant subjects, Dr. Torben Hansen from Steno Diabetes Center, Copenhagen, stated. "We hope our models will be used in epidemiological and genetic settings where questions related to beta-cell function and insulin resistance are important."
Dr. Hansen and colleagues sought to develop valid algorithms for estimating insulin sensitivity index and acute insulin response derived from simple, inexpensive physiological measurements.

The authors derived three equations each for insulin sensitivity index and acute insulin response based on sex, body mass index, and measurement of serum insulin and plasma glucose levels at various points during an oral glucose tolerance test.

The equations using all time points were highly correlated to insulin sensitivity index and acute insulin response values derived from intravenous glucose tolerance testing, the results indicate, and all three models for estimating insulin sensitivity index were about 30% more accurate than two widely used indexes of insulin sensitivity (i.e., fasting insulin and HOMA).

Similarly, the three methods for estimating acute insulin response were 20% to 30% more accurate than three currently used models for estimation of beta-cell function, the researchers note.

The models proved less accurate when they were applied to subjects with impaired glucose tolerance than when applied to data from nondiabetic individuals without impaired glucose tolerance, the report indicates.

"These models give important and quite precise information on beta-cell function and insulin sensitivity among glucose tolerant subjects," Dr. Hansen concluded.

"The models might be used when such information is important, Dr. Hansen continued. "For example: ‘What is the effect on glucose metabolism when doing lifestyle interventions in the general population?’ (or) ‘What is the effect when using specific drugs?’"

DID YOU KNOW:
Number Of New Diabetes-related Kidney Failure More Than Doubles In 10 Years: The number of newly diagnosed end-stage renal disease (kidney failure) patients with diabetes increased by 114% over 10 years., from 1995 to 2004. This increase in the presence of diabetes among new end-stage renal disease (ESRD) patients correlates with an increase in the incidence of diabetes, this comes from a new report by CIHI
