We have always known that patients with diabetes are more likely to get infections, and they are usually more severe. The pandemic that we are just starting to emerge from has certainly proven that, as patients with diabetes were more likely to contract the coronavirus, more likely to be hospitalized, and more likely to die. This can be explained by the increased risk these patients have for respiratory diseases like pneumonia.

With these factors in mind, is the diagnosis the problem, or the severity of the diabetes measured by A1c levels? This week, Shalonda Kimble, PharmD Candidate, South College School of Pharmacy, has looked at the information and found out there is a relationship, and knowing what numbers to treat your patients to may make a big difference.
