In diabetics, the CHF incidence rate was 30.9 case per 1,000 person-years, significantly greater than the CHF incidence rate among non-diabetic. The results are based on a medical record review and 6-year follow up of 8,086 patients with type 2 diabetes and 8,845 non-diabetic gender- and age-matched controls.

In diabetics, the CHF incidence rate was 30.9 case per 1,000 person-years, significantly greater than the CHF incidence rate among non-diabetic controls of 12.4 cases per 1,000 person-years. This translates into a rate ratio of 2.5.

Previous estimates of CHF incidence in diabetic patients range from between two and 10 cases per 1,000 person-years. But these are based on "smaller samples, shorter follow-up, or case requiring hospitalization," Dr. Gregory A. Nichols of Kaiser Permanente in Portland, Oregon and colleagues note in a meeting abstract.

In a multivariate Cox model, age, ischemic heart disease, poorer glycemic control, and greater BMI were "important predictors" of the development of CHF, with hazard ratios of 1.07, 2.34, 1.04, and 1.31, respectively.

This study indicates that more type 2 diabetic patients are developing CHF than previously thought and highlights the importance of controlling modifiable risk factors for CHF such as obesity and hyperglycemia, Dr. Nichols and colleagues say.

The current study builds on prior research by the same team suggesting an increased incidence of CHF associated with initiating anti-hyperglycemic therapies

Study results presented at the American Diabetes Association’s 64th Scientific Sessions.

DID YOU KNOW:
INACTIVITY. Only one-third of Americans maintain a regimen of physical activity. Instead, television, computers and video games dominate leisure time. Meanwhile, North Carolina schools have cut back on physical education — high schoolers need just one semester of PE to graduate — considering it a frill that is not measured in academic accountability standards.
