Firas El-Khatib, PhD, explains some of the details of how the current bionic pancreas works – with three devices – and how a future design will probably only have two devices with a combination insulin/glucagon pump system. He says that, although the bionic device is not a cure, it is a comprehensive solution until there is a cure.

Firas El-Khatib, PhD, is a Co-Investigator and Senior Research Scientist in the Department of Biomedical Engineering, Boston University, Massachusetts. Dr. El-Khatib received his B.Eng. from American University of Beirut in Lebanon (1998); his M.S. from the university of Illinois at Urbana-Champaign (UIUC) (2001); and his Ph.D. also from UIUC (2005).
