Patients who have diabetes are at an increased risk for community-acquired pneumococcal bacteremia.

The impact of diabetes on the risk for pneumococcal bacteremia was most pronounced in adults age 40 and younger and in people without any other coexisting morbidity.

The study found the crude odds ratio for pneumococcal bacteremia in patients with diabetes was 1.9, but after adjustment for comorbidity, the odds ratio decreased to 1.5.

The researchers say 24 of every 1,000 admissions with incident pneumococcal bacteremia may be attributed to diabetes, based on the assumptions that the association between diabetes and pneumococcal bacteremia was causal and that there was a 5% overall prevalence of diabetes in the study population.
