May reduce food cravings and diabetes risk….

Researchers at Loma Linda University studied the effects of the addition of Hass avocado to a lunchtime meal. They evaluated the Hass Avocado’s effect on satiety, on blood sugar and insulin response, and on food consumption post-meal.

The study showed that the inclusion of avocado with a meal results in a smaller post-meal insulin rise when compared to consuming a meal without the addition of avocado. The findings may hint towards a possible dietary approach in curbing hunger and the desire to eat in overweight individuals.

Avocados have long been known as a diabetes-friendly food item. They contain a high amount of omega-3 fatty acids, vitamins, minerals and have a glycemic index (scale from 1-100 with higher numbers indicating foods that increase blood sugar higher and faster) of less than 15.

The study was supported by a Hass Avocado Board (HAB) and the research team presented their study at the International Union of Nutritional Science (IUNS) 20th International Congress of Nutrition in Spain.

"While more studies are needed, this research provides promising clues and a basis for future research to determine avocados’ effect on satiety, glucose and blood insulin response," said Nikki Ford, Nutrition Director, HAB.

The study was presented at the IUNS 20th International Congress of Nutrition, in Spain.
