The Omnipod 5 Automated Insulin Delivery System (AID) is a waterproof insulin pump that can be worn during swimming. However, the wireless communication between the pump and the continuous glucose monitor (CGM) may be disrupted underwater.

Methods: The study conducted a retrospective analysis of data from the Omnipod 5 pivotal trial to assess the success rate of wireless communication between the pump and CGM during swimming.

Results: The study found that the median success rate of wireless communication during swimming was 9.1%. The success rate was higher for swims with shorter durations and for swims in which the pump and CGM were closer together.

Conclusions: The study found that the wireless communication between the Omnipod 5 pump and CGM can be disrupted during swimming. However, the success rate of wireless communication was higher for shorter swims and for swims in which the pump and CGM were closer together.

Here are some additional details from the study:

  • The study included data from 124 swims.
  • The median duration of the swims was 30 minutes.
  • The median distance between the pump and CGM was 33 centimeters.
  • The success rate of wireless communication was 100% for swims with a duration of less than 10 minutes.
  • The success rate of wireless communication was 57% for swims with a duration of 30 minutes.
  • The success rate of wireless communication was 33% for swims with a distance of 60 centimeters between the pump and CGM.

The study authors concluded that the Omnipod 5 pump and CGM can be used for swimming, but users should be aware that the wireless communication may be disrupted. Users should also take steps to minimize the risk of disruption, such as swimming for shorter durations and keeping the pump and CGM close together.

Here are some additional tips for swimming with the Omnipod 5:

  • Test the wireless communication between the pump and CGM before you go swimming.
  • Keep the pump and CGM close together during swimming.
  • Avoid swimming in areas with strong currents or waves.
  • Take a break from swimming if you notice that the wireless communication is not working.
  • Monitor your blood sugar closely after swimming.
