The U.S. Food and Drug Administration (FDA) has approved once-weekly Bydureon (exenatide injection) extended-release suspension for adults with type 2 diabetes. The approval was based on data from a clinical trial that showed that Bydureon was effective in lowering blood sugar levels and was well-tolerated by patients.

Bydureon is a GLP-1 receptor agonist, which is a type of medication that helps to lower blood sugar levels by increasing insulin production and decreasing glucagon production. GLP-1 receptor agonists are also known to help with weight loss, which is a common problem in people with type 2 diabetes.

The clinical trial that led to the approval of Bydureon included over 3,000 adults with type 2 diabetes. Patients were randomly assigned to receive either Bydureon or a placebo. After 26 weeks, patients who received Bydureon had significantly lower blood sugar levels than patients who received the placebo.

Bydureon was also well-tolerated by patients in the clinical trial. The most common side effects were nausea, vomiting, diarrhea, and constipation. These side effects were usually mild and went away on their own.

Bydureon is the first once-weekly GLP-1 receptor agonist to be approved by the FDA. It is a welcome addition to the treatment options available for adults with type 2 diabetes.

Here are some additional information about Bydureon:

Here are some additional information about GLP-1 receptor agonists:

  • GLP-1 receptor agonists are a relatively new class of medications for type 2 diabetes.
  • GLP-1 receptor agonists work by mimicking the effects of a natural hormone called glucagon-like peptide-1 (GLP-1).
  • GLP-1 helps to lower blood sugar levels by increasing insulin production and decreasing glucagon production.
  • GLP-1 also helps with weight loss by increasing satiety and decreasing appetite.
  • GLP-1 receptor agonists are generally well-tolerated, but they can cause some side effects, such as nausea, vomiting, diarrhea, and constipation.
  • If you are considering taking a GLP-1 receptor agonist, talk to your doctor about the risks and benefits.

Here are some additional information about type 2 diabetes:

  • Type 2 diabetes is a chronic condition that affects how your body turns food into energy.
  • In people with type 2 diabetes, the body either resists the effects of insulin or doesn’t make enough insulin.
  • Insulin is a hormone that helps the body use glucose for energy.
  • When your blood sugar levels are high, it can lead to a number of health problems, such as heart disease, stroke, blindness, and kidney disease.
  • There is no cure for type 2 diabetes, but it can be managed with diet, exercise, and medication.
  • If you think you may have type 2 diabetes, talk to your doctor. They can test you for the condition and recommend a treatment plan.
