She recently put together an overview of how diabetes and increased glucose levels in non-diagnosed diabetes patients can increase the patients’ chances of dying from an infection.
The information she is sharing will make you think twice about giving a patient time to fix their glucose before you begin aggressive therapy.

The diagnosis and treatment of depression in the elderly population with type 2 diabetes are essential for managing dementia risks.
Even patients without diabetes may be at a higher risk for complications and mortality if their blood glucose is elevated.
Many adults with type 2 diabetes carry the burden of complicated medication regimens, associated with worse patient outcomes and a higher potential for drug interactions.
Fact: 20% of Diabetes Patients With COVID-19 May Die
A study in Diabetologia found that 20% of patients died within 28 days of being admitted to a hospital. Based on data from roughly 2,800 adults, the findings also revealed that elevated blood glucose level at the time of hospital admission was a strong predictor of lower odds of discharge and a higher risk of death. The patients’ mean age was 70, nearly two-thirds were men, and many were overweight. About 40% were also experiencing various forms of complications from their diabetes. Routine treatment by insulin and statin were cited as deleterious factors, while younger age, routine metformin therapy and longer symptom duration on admission were positively associated with discharge. Of those patients who survived at least one month, 50% were discharged from the hospital with a median stay of nine days; 12% were still hospitalized on day 28, and 17% had been transferred from their first hospital to another facility.
