Editor's Note
Many times we hear our patients complain that they are limited because of their diabetes, and they then start to regress, blaming the disease for everything. Would that be worse if you were a top athlete just coming into your prime? And what if your medical team told you that the sport you had chosen to excel in was too dangerous to participate in if you had diabetes?
This week, as the Tour de France moves into its second week, we have the story of Stephen Clancy, who was Ireland’s top young cyclist in 2012, diagnosed with diabetes in the next year, and worked his way up to participating in the upcoming Tour of Utah race with some of the same participants riding in France today. His story goes to show that no one should be allowed to use diabetes as an excuse.

Glucose phosphorylation and glucose transport are tightly coupled phenomena. Isoenzymes of HK (HK-I to HK-IV) catalyze the first committed intracellular step of glucose metabolism, the conversion of glucose to G-6-P. HK-I, HK-II, HK-III are single-chain peptides that have a number of properties in common, including a very high affinity for glucose and product inhibition by G-6-P.

Ralph DeFronzo and his researchers at UT Health at San Antonio announced that they have cured type 1 diabetes.
As we know, the most ineffective medication is the one needed but never taken. There are many reasons our patients don’t take prescription medicines, but a biggy is the cost. If a medicine is too expensive, the patient will not fill the prescription, therefore won’t take it. For example, when ordering an SGLT-2 and/or GLP-1, each can cost hundreds or more for a month’s prescription. Some are covered for both. Some are covered for one brand, but not the other.
Study shows age-related comorbidities decreased in males over 65 who take metformin.
