The developers of a drug to help diabetics control blood sugar levels and cholesterol said they’re not sure they’ll continue to pursue the treatment.

The announcement came after the Food and Drug Administration said it wants additional safety data about the drug muraglitazar. The FDA and some doctors have raised concerns the treatment could be associated with heart problems. Bristol-Myers Squibb, which developed the drug along with Merck, said the studies that would be required to obtain the additional data could take up to five years to perform. The company said it will continue discussions with the FDA and will consider a range of options, including conducting additional studies or terminating further development. The drug had appeared headed for the market after members of an FDA advisory committee voted to recommend its approval.

Dr. Bernstein’s Diabetes Diet :
THE DIABETES DIET was designed for controlling blood sugars in diabetics, but its health and weight-management benefits apply to everyone. Focusing on protein, fat, and slow-acting carbohydrate, this plan prevents the blood sugar roller-coaster ride caused by a carbohydrate-heavy diet, which can result in obesity, increased blood pressure, and damage to the lining of the blood vessels. A diabetic himself for almost sixty years, Dr. Bernstein meticulously followed the guidelines of the American Diabetes Association, yet his health steadily deteriorated. It wasn’t until he devised his own, more effective method for regulating blood sugar that Dr. Bernstein started to enjoy a healthy life.
