A fixed dose combination of losartan and ramipril showed good to excellent efficacy response in 98% of patients. The combination of losartan and ramipril is effective in reducing blood pressure levels in patients with both hypertension and diabetes.
"The fixed dose combination of losartan and ramipril showed good to excellent efficacy response in 98% of patients," said researcher Dilip Pawar, MD, PhD, Unichem Laboratories Ltd., Mumbai, India. "Close to 80% of patients were able to achieve a target blood pressure of 130/80 mm Hg."

Dr. Pawar presented the results of the Losartan Ramipril in Diabetic Hypertensives (LORD) Trial.

Almost all patients in the study reported good to excellent tolerability, the researchers reported in their submitted abstract. The study looked at the combination treatment in patients with mild to moderate hypertension and diabetes.

The trial was conducted at seven centers in 325 patients. All of the patients were treated with losartan 50 mg and ramipril 2.5 mg or losartan 50 mg and ramipril 5 mg, once a day, depending on baseline blood pressure for 12 weeks.

The researchers evaluated data on 315 patients. Mean pre-study systolic blood pressure was 160 mm Hg, which was significantly reduced to 126 mm Hg at the end of 12 weeks. Similarly, mean diastolic blood pressure was 99 mm Hg at baseline, which was significantly reduced to 80 mm Hg at the study end.

The goal of blood pressure of 130/80 mm Hg was achieved in 79% of patients, the researchers reported.

Reported October 4th at the 33rd Annual American Academy of Clinical Pharmacology.
