Children and adolescents with insulin-dependent (type 1) diabetes, particularly girls, show early signs of changes in the heart. Dr. Bert E. Suys at University Hospital of Antwerp and colleagues used ultrasound to examine the hearts of 80 young people with diabetes and 52 age-matched control subjects.
As reported in the medical journal Diabetes Care, the wall of the left ventricle, the main pumping chamber of the heart, was thicker in girls with diabetes than in the non-diabetic group. The hearts of diabetic girls also showed delayed relaxation between heartbeats.
For boys, the only difference between those with and without diabetes was in the relaxation time.
Suys and his associates theorize that, in children, "perhaps already a small increase in blood glucose is sufficient to initiate changes in the cardiovascular system," thus underscoring the importance of long-term blood sugar control.
Patients with diabetes may benefit from drugs like ACE inhibitors and beta-blockers that are used to treat heart failure, the researchers add, but only further research will clarify this issue.

DID YOU KNOW: How long must men wait to use nitroglycerin after taking Viagra, Levitra, or Cialis? Nitrates are contraindicated with these phosphodiesterase 5 (PDE5) inhibitors…the combination can cause life-threatening hypotension. In general, nitrates can be given 24 hours after taking Viagra or Levitra…or 48 hours after taking Cialis. Some patients may need to wait longer. The effects of PDE5 inhibitors can be prolonged in patients with renal or hepatic dysfunction…or when given with drugs that slow their metabolism. Recommend that men seek emergency care if they have chest pain less than 24 to 48 hours after taking a PDE5 inhibitor. Tell them it’s not safe to take nitroglycerin at home. Warn patients already taking nitrates for ischemic heart disease NOT to try Viagra, Levitra, or Cialis. As a rule of thumb, sexual activity is okay if patients can walk a mile in 20 minutes without chest pain. But recommend waiting 5 days after stopping long-acting nitrates before starting a PDE5 inhibitor…to allow the nitrates to be eliminated and make sure the patient doesn’t have chest pain.
