Study of 180,000 male type 2 patients finds a correlation between type 2 and urinary symptoms….

As men age, common disorders they may experience are lower urinary tract symptoms, benign prostatic hyperplasia, and type 2 diabetes. Diabetes negatively impacts the bladder.

This study looked at two large cohorts where the patients completed a questionnaire examining type 2 diabetics and the prevalence and incidence of urinary tract symptoms. The questionnaire included a standardized assessment of lower urinary tract symptoms.

The study did find an association between type 2 diabetes and lower urinary tract symptoms. It was found that men with type 2 diabetes were 32% more likely to report having lower urinary tract symptoms.

The association found with diabetes and urinary tract symptoms was even stronger in the patients who were on active pharmaceutical treatment and had diabetes for a longer period of time. The study also found no association between type 2 diabetes and new onset lower urinary tract symptoms.

The final report of the study concluded that type 2 diabetic male patients have an increased risk for lower urinary tract symptoms.
