Study shows data that negates resveratrol’s use in metabolic disorders as a nutritional supplement….
Resveratrol has been shown in animal and in-vitro models to reduce the risk of obesity, diabetes, hypertension, and dyslipidemia. In previous animal studies, it was shown to reduce these metabolic disorders by stimulating the silent mating type information regulation 2 homolog-1 (SIRT1). Currently, there have been limited studies in humans to prove its effectiveness.
A recent published study looked at the effect of high-dose resveratrol in 24 obese men. The men were randomized to receive either resveratrol or placebo for four weeks.
The study found a decrease in insulin sensitivity in both resveratrol and control groups that were not significant. There was no change in endogenous glucose production, turnover of glucose, or glucose oxidation rates. In addition, resveratrol had no effect on blood pressure, REE, lipid oxidation rates, ectopic or visceral fat content, or inflammatory/metabolic markers. The authors explained that the results of this human study negate the data found in rodent models about the use of resveratrol as a human nutritional supplement in metabolic disorders.
