Letter from the Editor #614: The Blood Sugar Roller Coaster

Last week I walked into the pharmacy and heard a call over the intercom, “Manager to deli, please.” I didn’t think anything of it until the manager called me back to the deli because one of his employees was lying on the floor with a glucose reading of 36mg/dl. We gave her cake icing to raise her glucose quickly and within an hour her glucose was up to 286 mg/dl. I later spent a little time talking to her about her glucose and found out that she is often on the blood sugar rollercoaster and had no idea what to do about it. I asked our resident guru, Sherry Colberg, PhD, to address this issue and she put together What You Can Do to Stop the Blood Sugar Rollercoaster. I recommend you print this out and give it to your patients who have the problem.

Will money talk? CMS has just released new coding specifics for preventative services including obesity, and we have those codes for you and how to use them. See this week’s Item #3, New Codes for Reimbursement from Medicare for Preventive Services, and then print out our special PDF handout.
