A new study has found that bedtime plasma glucose level can serve as a predictor of long-term blood glucose control outcome in patients undergoing insulin lispro mixture-50 (Mix 50) three times daily monotherapy. There was a significant improvement in HbA1c, from 10.1% at baseline to 7.8% at 6-8 weeks and to 6.8% at 6 months. Blood glucose levels measured at bedtime correlated significantly with HbA1c improvement at 6-8 weeks. In insulin-naive patients’ bedtime blood glucose levels correlated significantly with HbA1c levels at 6 months. The researchers concluded that bedtime plasma glucose levels should be reduced sufficiently in order to achieve adequate long-term blood glucose control. Tanaka, M. et al.
