Sheri Colberg, PhD, ADA 2013, Q9: Are there any popular exercise programs that stand out?

Dr. Colberg talks about popular exercise programs and how people will start and stop them, and that they are not always effective. She says that the best exercise program is the one that the patient will actually do. It’s important to recommend something that’s fun, not too intense not likely to cause injury and can fit into their life without being excruciating. So if a 5 minute walk 10 times a day works, then they should do that. She also talks about developing her own exercise program and a study on improving balance in older people using the Wii Fit system and but notes that there is a lot already out there.

Sheri_ColbergSheri Colberg, PhD, is an author, exercise physiologist, and professor of exercise science at Old Dominion University and adjunct professor of internal medicine at Eastern Virginia Medical School, both in Norfolk, Virginia. Having earned her undergraduate degree from Stanford University and a Ph.D. from the University of California, Berkeley, she specializes in research on diabetes and exercise and continues to conduct extensive clinical research specifically in Type 2 diabetes and exercise with funding from the American Diabetes Association (ADA), NIH, and others. She has authored eight books, along with more than 175 research and educational articles on physical activity, diabetes, healthy lifestyles, and aging.
