Sheri Colberg, PhD, ADA 2013, Q3: Why keeping muscle mass is important for people with diabetes

Dr. Colberg talks about anaerobic exercise vs aerobic, and what the best ratio is. She says that there are a number of studies on this subject and that, in her new book, she updates some of the conventional wisdom on this topic. She says that resistance training very important in particular for older people and that many previous trials didn’t break down the types of exercise so results could sometimes be misleading. And she notes that it’s important to do both types of exercise but for different reasons. Another factor is age: as people age, they lose muscle mass. Since glucose is stored inmuscle mass, older people are essentially losing storage capacity, making it harder for the body to handle carbs. So resistance training in the elderly patient population is very important.

Sheri_ColbergSheri Colberg, PhD, is an author, exercise physiologist, and professor of exercise science at Old Dominion University and adjunct professor of internal medicine at Eastern Virginia Medical School, both in Norfolk, Virginia. Having earned her undergraduate degree from Stanford University and a Ph.D. from the University of California, Berkeley, she specializes in research on diabetes and exercise and continues to conduct extensive clinical research specifically in Type 2 diabetes and exercise with funding from the American Diabetes Association (ADA), NIH, and others. She has authored eight books, along with more than 175 research and educational articles on physical activity, diabetes, healthy lifestyles, and aging.
