Editor's Note
The kidney is one of the most studied organs in the body, and is affected by many diseases. Even food can have an effect on proper renal function. When things go wrong in the kidney, we at times see a cascade of problems that get worse as time goes by. We know that high glucose levels affect the kidneys and can lead to kidney failure. We also know that diabetes exerts its effect by causing a re-uptake of glucose in the kidneys, and the SGLT-2 inhibitors work to reverse that effect. However, we are learning that this class of drugs can have positive effects on more than just lowering A1c’s in our patients.
