For many years the Holy Grail of diabetes therapy has been oral insulin. The thought process has been: if patient did not have to inject, they would be happy to use insulin multiple times a day. While we don’t seem that close to oral insulin, we do have an opportunity to convert a very popular class of drugs from injectable to oral.
Now that Novo Nordisk have submitted an application to the FDA for oral semaglutide, we will see if patients really prefer oral over injectable. One thing we know for sure: it is a lot harder to meet the requirements for taking the oral than injecting.

New research findings on oral semaglutide vs subcutaneous liraglutide.
The role of 25-hydroxyvitamin D in the progression of type 2 diabetes continues to be explored after a recent study observes diabetes incidence in high risk patients receiving vitamin supplementation.
Thirty years of follow-up data show significant reductions in morbidities and mortality in patients with prediabetes who initiate lifestyle modifications.
Did You Know: Maternal A1c Linked to Autism in Children
The findings from data for 35,819 mother-infant pairs, presented at the American Diabetes Association Annual meeting and published in the Journal of the American Medical Association, found that children whose mothers had A1C levels greater than 6.5% during early pregnancy were almost two times as likely to be diagnosed with autism in the first 4 years of life as those whose mothers had A1C levels below 5.7%. Epidemiologic data suggest that maternal diabetes influences the risk for autism in offspring. The prevalence of autism has steadily risen in the U.S., currently affecting 1 in 59 children. Maternal diabetes, if not well treated, means hyperglycemia in utero, which increases uterine inflammation, oxidative stress and hypoxia and may alter gene expression. This can disrupt fetal brain development, increasing the risk for neural behavior disorders, such as autism. Journal of the American Medical Association
