Letter from the Editor
This week we have an interesting article on the use of nonnutritive sweeteners. Over the years, we have had many of these as one opinion or another had flip-flopped as to the benefit or harm of these products. As an educator, I have always been in favor of using them and felt that in addition to the benefits of lower caloric intake, the use of nonnutritive aweeteners was a constant reminder to the patient that they need to be doing something.
This latest article, researched by Josephat Macharia, PharmD candidate, Lecom School of Pharmacy class of 2018, leans toward reasons not to use these products. I want you to read this article and form your own opinion. However, for me, the claims do not seem to be fair due to the lack of discussion as to what would have happened to these patients if they had never used the products. If you have an opinion you would like to share, send me an email at editor@diabetesincontrol.com

Did You Know: Getting People To Exercise With Financial Incentives: Does it Work?
In a current study, participants were promised a monetary incentive for going to the gym three times a week. They all said they planned to meet the requirement, but by the end of the study only one-third had done so. People given an incentive made 0.14 more visits to the gym each week than those who did not receive an incentive, according to the report. New gym members, who intended to visit the gym three times per week, only ended up averaging one weekly visit by the end of the study. What was thought to be a sure way to get people to exercise was offering them a $60 dollar Amazon gift card if new gym members visited the gym just nine times during the first six weeks they’d joined. The results of the study show that financial incentives alone may not be the answer to get people to change lifestyles. — July 2017 National Bureau of Economic Research
