- How to Improve What Really Matters: Quality of Life, Not Longevity

Letter from the Editor

I just did a CE program for consultant pharmacists in Lake Mary, Florida. We were discussing the reasons why we may not try to work to perfection with our older patients. One of my colleagues brought up the 5-star ratings and how one of the measurements had to do with using statins in all diabetes patients. Over the past couple of years there have been studies — some published on our website — that could be interpreted as contradictory to that guideline. This led to a discussion on the quality of life versus longevity and how we play such a pivotal role with our patients. This week, Dr Sheri Colberg looks at what really matters in her feature “How to improve Quality of Life not Longevity.”
Another of our contributors, David Kliff, looks at how the use of the SGLT-2 Inhibitor, Empaglifozin, can improve A1Cs while reducing heart risks and possibly improving quality of life.

A public FDA advisory committee meeting is scheduled for next month to discuss whether Dexcom’s G5 Mobile Continuous Glucose Monitoring System device can be marketed as a replacement for fingerstick blood glucose meters. On July 21, 2016, the committee will discuss, make recommendations, and vote on information regarding a premarket approval application (PMA) panel-track supplement for a proposed change in intended use of Dexcom, Inc.’s, Dexcom G5® Mobile Continuous Glucose Monitoring System (CGM) device so that, in addition to tracking and trending interstitial fluid glucose concentrations, patients can use the device as a replacement for their blood glucose meters and make treatment decisions based on the interstitial fluid glucose concentration reported by the CGM.

Panel further assessing date that SGLT-2 drug shows actual benefit for heart.

For many years, I have focused on aspects of lifestyle and health management that can enhance quality of life, especially when living with a chronic disease like diabetes, rather than simply on living a long time (longevity). Much of my motivation is derived from the personal experience of watching my maternal grandmother suffer through six (long) years of severe disability related to cardiovascular complications of diabetes starting at the age of 70 that left her unable to feed herself or communicate, bed bound, and with almost no quality of life for her final six years of life. Really, what is the point of simply being alive when you’re really not experiencing life under such conditions?
