Editor's Note
We are at the ADA in New Orleans and as I was looking over the posters, there was a whole section focused on Gene Expression and Biosynthesis. There were multiple small population projects on what might cause the mutations and proposed mechanisms to fix or prevent the problems that these mutations often bring.
A lot of what they covered was very complex and I had to look up a few terms. Over the next few weeks we will be sharing this information with you, but for now, getting a basic understanding of these concepts and how this newer science works may be a good reason to check out this week’s Clinical Text on translation and translocation.

Insulin biosynthesis: the previous section outlines that insulin gene transcription is a highly controlled process. The product of this process, pre-proinsulin mRNA, is unusually stable in pancreatic beta cells and it is further stabilized as glucose concentrations increase. As such, there is normally an abundant source of preproinsulin mRNA in the beta-cell cytosol available for translation.
