Letter from the Editor, #664: The Glucocard Expression

Every week our publisher and production editor give me a deadline to have my "Letter from the Editor" to them. It seems no matter how early I get started, I barely get it to them in time. This delay in doing my part causes all of us extra stress. However after reading this week’s Item 12 and learning how stress can increase your risk of diabetes I am going to try harder to make the deadline and reduce the stress all of us face.

There is a new glucose meter on the market that is worth looking at. The Glucocard Expression (our Product of the Week) is a meter that many of our patients, especially seniors, may find to be a perfect fit.

Our older patients often suffer from decreased hearing, vision and fine motor skills and this meter addresses all of those problems. It is large enough that a patient with arthritis can easily hold on to it, has over-sized numbers and icons for those who have vision problems, and it also talks in both English and Spanish to facilitate better recognition of readings. It uses a small sample size but the strips are large enough that our older patients can grab them easily. For those who are tech savvy it has great software and can be downloaded to the ARK Care® Real-Time Data Management System so that you can access the patient’s data on any computer.
