Years ago, just out of pharmacy school, I worked in a nursing home pharmacy where we supplied the oral and IV medications for several facilities. When we could not get an IV started in a patient we used a drug called hyaluronidase to increase absorption of the drug: then we could administer the IV drug under the skin. More recently this drug has been used to counteract improper injection or allergic reaction to hyaluronic acid by causing this acid to be broken down and absorbed into the body. Now Halozyme Therapeutics has applied hyaluronidase to improve control of post-prandial glucose levels in patients using rapid-acting insulin.
