It’s all about the pounds this week in the latest and best articles on the internet from our staff here at Diabetes in Control. The research is exploding in various ways to fight the diabetes, weight, and cholesterol triad.

Exercise and physical activity play a big part in this as is seen in Items #1, Exercising an Hour Every Two Days Works for People with Diabetes and #3, Walking Switches Off ‘Obesity Genes’ and TV-Watching Ramps Them Up, and our Product of the Week, the CardioTrainer App gives your Android-using patients a way to record this activity.

Our Item #12 shows that adding a certain type of seaweed extract to drinks can actually lower glucose spikes by over half and there’s more research on the advantages of bariatric surgery for our patients.

The American Association of Clinical Endocrinologists has also endorsed a new lower target for LDL cholesterol — see Item #2, AACE Endorses New Lower LDL Targets and ApoB Testing. These new targets will hopefully motivate us to do a better job, especially in our younger patients.

One of our Advisory Board Members, Aaron I. Vinik, MD, PhD, FCP, MACP, has been extensively involved in work on new weight loss compounds and combinations, and this week we have a special feature that he prepared exclusively for us. Simply Suppressing Hedonism or Truly a magic Bullet for Obesity? is worth reading and then rereading to understand how these compounds work.
