This is an exciting week for many of our readers. As you receive this newsletter over 3,000 of the most recognized experts in Diabetes Care, CDE’s, will be gathering in Atlanta for the American Association of Diabetes Educator’s 36th Annual Meeting.
This year there is a lot to talk about. The burgeoning epidemic of diabetes is finally causing some movement on HR 2425 the Disease Self Management Training and Education (DSMT) bill that allows CDE’s to bill Medicare and others for Diabetes care for our patients. If you are a physician, you will be able to have a CDE work for you and bill for the services in your office, and if you are a CDE you can offer one-on-one service in any area of the country.
This year there are two new and exciting products that are going to be unveiled at the meeting.
The first is the new Solo MicroPump that appears to be a combination of all the best features that an insulin pump could have. This looks to be the smallest, lightest, most discreet full-featured insulin pump ever. Check out this week’s new product to learn more and see it here before anywhere else.
Then there is the FDA’s decision to approve Onglyza® (saxagliptin) by AstraZeneca and Bristol-Myers Squibb. This is a new DDP-IV inhibitor that works like Merck’s Januvia®(sitagliptin). Although many of you think this is just another me-too drug, it is significant that the FDA has finally seen their way to approve a new drug for diabetes. See This Week’s Item #1.
According to Dave Kliff, at Diabetic Investor, "Perhaps the best news here is that the FDA has actually approved a new diabetes drug. For some time, I was beginning to wonder if we would ever see something approved given all the new guidelines. Let’s just hope the agency goes one step further and approves Victoza and Byetta LAR.…"
It’s going to be exciting to be in Atlanta this week and if you are attending the AADE’s 36th Annual Meeting in Atlanta be sure and stop by our booth (#1518) to sample some new Slow-Carb products and meet the staff of Diabetes in Control.
