Editor’s Note, DCMS #244

We’ve been at the ADA Scientific Sessions in Boston for the last four days where we garnered more than 20 interviews with top thinkers in diabetes. We will be bringing you this great information over the next few months. One of our favorite interviewees is always Dr. Aaron Vinik, who is also on our Advisory Board. His wife Etta has also been involved in diabetes therapy for many years and while we wait for the new set of videos, we have some information for you on ways to interview and motivate your patients featuring some of her best tidbits.

We also held our annual Advisory Board meeting at ADA and had a great time with Dr. Vinik, Keith Campbell, Stanley Schwartz, Lou Aronne, Sheri Colberg, and members of our own staff. Our production editor, Heather Moran, brought a good friend of hers who has lived with type 1 for 43 of her 45 years. When it came time to order from the menu, it was evident that her worst complication of diabetes was vision problems caused by retinopathy. Her type of problem is discussed in this week’s Clinical Text, as we continue with part 2 of our feature on retinopathy.

Our Disaster Averted looks at how choosing the right words when asking a hypoglycemic patient about their episodes can make a life or death difference, and the Homerun Slides consider what might happen if we change what we call type 2 insulin-dependent diabetes patients, and if that could lead to better outcomes.
