In last Saturday’s newsletter, my editorial focused on physical activity and how the new year brings all kinds of exercise programs that will make our patients thinner and healthier in only a matter of minutes a day. We know that these programs rarely work long term and our patients sometimes get so depressed from this failure that they actually end up gaining weight and losing whatever benefit they acquired.
This week our excerpt from Joslin’s Diabetes Deskbook looks at the use of physical activity for diabetes care and glucose control. Unlike most features that only extoll the benefits of exercise, the authors take time to explain why this physical activity is valuable and how it affects glucose control in both type 1 and type 2 patients.
Our Homerun Slides look at the value of the Nice-Sugar study in the care of hospitalized patients and how we can use the information to ensure better outcomes. And our Disaster Averted actually points to the value of EHR’s to prevent medication duplication.
In our Mastery In Minutes video, Steven N. Blair, PhD, FACSM, helps us help our patients even more with some of the techniques he uses to help change patient behavior.
