Hypoglycemia and hyperglycemia are often exaggerated during the holidays, either because of too much food, increased activity, more travel than usual, or all of these combined. For our type 1 patients both low and elevated levels might be because they are eating foods they are not familiar with. However these problems can also occur because of improper administration of what we think is the correct dose of insulin.

Our Disaster Averted looks at what happens when patients inadvertently change their insulin dose for no apparent reason, and our Clinical Text from Diabetic Emergencies, Diagnosis and Clinical Management, walks us through two cases where patient mistakes and misjudgments led to serious problems.
