Editor’s Note: Uncommon Diabetes Diagnoses

Recently I was teaching a diabetes class and one of the attendees was a 32 y/o man, newly diagnosed with an A1c of 10.7 and a casual bg of 385 mg/dl. He had lost 35 lbs over the past 3 months without even trying. His doctor sent him to the class to learn how to eat right but it was obvious from his A1c and weight loss that he was possibly developing insulin dependent diabetes. I first figured it was late onset Type 1 but after comparing his symptoms to the “Homerun” slides this week I had an idea it may be a form of Monogenic Diabetes and I referred him to an endocrinologist.
