Coping with a Type 2 Diabetes Diagnosis

Being newly diagnosed with Type 2 Diabetes can be overwhelming. While continuous glucose monitors and insulin pumps have revolutionized diabetes care, developing healthy lifestyle habits such as proper nutrition, regular exercise, and adequate sleep are still essential.

Although diabetes educators, nutritionists, and physical trainers can provide guidance, the responsibility for maintaining good diabetes care lies with the patient. Here are some observations based on my years of experience treating patients with diabetes:

Blood sugar levels can be unpredictable, and sometimes the cause is unknown. Rather than panicking, it’s essential to monitor your levels and identify patterns. For instance, if your sugars tend to dip in the late afternoon, consider having a small snack to bridge the gap between lunch and dinner. If you notice worrisome patterns or have difficulty managing your blood sugar levels, consult your healthcare provider.

Consistency is key. Try to maintain a regular schedule for glucose monitoring, eating, and exercise. Consistency helps to balance carbs and calories, making it easier to detect problems and keep blood sugar levels within the target range.

Perfection is not necessary. No one is perfect, and managing diabetes can be challenging. Remember to be persistent and strive to do better. Also, occasional indulgences in a favorite dessert or a small serving of french fries won’t harm your A1c.

Weight loss can be beneficial. Losing weight in small increments can improve insulin sensitivity and help regulate blood sugar levels. Avoid fad diets or quick weight loss schemes and focus on a healthy, well-balanced diet.

Exercise can be enjoyable. Regular exercise, such as walking, can lower blood sugar levels and blood pressure, and improve mood. Consider adopting a dog or borrowing one to have a furry companion on your walks.

In conclusion, living with diabetes requires commitment and effort. However, it’s possible to maintain good health by adopting healthy lifestyle habits, monitoring blood sugar levels, and seeking medical guidance when needed. Remember, it’s up to you to take charge of your diabetes care.
