Citizens of Berkeley, California have voted for a tax on sugary drinks — a penny per ounce of soda, energy drink or sweetened tea — becoming the first city to pass such a tax in the U.S.. Proponents of the fee say it will help curb consumption of beverages contributing to the obesity epidemic. Opponents have dismissed the vote as an “outlier” that doesn’t represent the rest of the country.
