Last week we were having a discussion on how most healthcare companies want every diabetes patient on an ACE or ARB and a statin, regardless of their levels. I felt a 75 year old patient didn’t need to risk muscle pain and other side effects associated with statins, but one of my interns felt otherwise. Then our other intern, Usif Darwish, PharmD Candidate, Florida A&M University, shared an article he was working on that pointed to the fact that the pain may not be from the statin but from the reduction in cholesterol.
