Antipsychotic drugs are often given to children to treat a variety of mental health and behavioral concerns. However, treating children (ages 6-18) with many of these drugs often leads to significant weight gain. These drugs are known to increase weight, and risk for diabetes and worsen other metabolic measures in adults, but their effects on children aren’t as clear. This study looked at the impact of these medications (known as atypical antipsychotics) on adiposity (body fat) and insulin resistance, changes known to be associated with long-term increases in cardiovascular and diabetes risk. The researchers therefore urge careful attention to balancing risks and benefits when prescribing these drugs to children. ADA Scientific Sessions (128-OR) June 26, 2011
