Diabetes Link to Early Births, Caesareans: According to a report from the AIHW, over 20% of mothers with pre-existing diabetes gave birth early at 32 to 36 weeks. Almost 9% of mothers with GDM gave birth pre-term compared with just 5.6% of mothers without diabetes. Mothers with pre-existing diabetes were five times as likely to have a very pre-term birth as mothers with GDM, and three times more likely than those without diabetes. Close to 60% of all women with pre-existing diabetes had a caesarean section, compared with 38% of women who gave birth with GDM, and 30% of those who gave birth without diabetes.
