Steve, Andrew and I are in Orlando at the ADA 70th Scientific Sessions and although things are just getting started there is already news in the diabetes sector. Lilly has agreed to co-brand their Humulin insulin line with Walmart, the world’s largest retailer.
Beginning in mid-September, Lilly’s Humulin brand of insulin will be available in Walmart pharmacies across the U.S. under the dual-branded name Humulin ReliOn, including 10 mL vials of Humulin R U-100, Humulin N, and Humulin 70/30 formulations.
Novo announced they are reinitiating their Phase 3 obesity program for liraglutide. Based on the feedback from the FDA, Novo Nordisk now plans to reinitiate the global phase 3 program in the first half of 2011 in clinical trials comprising approximately 5,000 patients.
Johnson and Johnson announced the signing of two deals in the diabetes drug space. The first was with Diamyd Medical AB, a Swedish company that is conducting late-stage clinical tests on a drug, which is designed to prevent further destruction of pancreatic islet cells, and delay or prevent disease progression and other related complications. The second deal was with Metabolex, Inc., which has potential Type 2 diabetes drugs in preclinical development.
And from Astra Zeneca and Bristol Myers Squibb on their new Type 2 drug: according to a study published in the online version of Diabetes Care, “Dapagliflozin lowered hyperglycemia in treatment-naïve patients with newly diagnosed Type 2 diabetes. The near absence of hypoglycemia and an insulin-independent mechanism of action make dapagliflozin a unique addition to existing treatment options for Type 2 diabetes.”
Finally, Biodel announced the results of a phase 3 study of their faster acting human insulin, Viaject vs Regular Human Insulin. This is human insulin not an analog and it actually causes less hypoglycemia and weight gain vs regular human insulin.

Correction: Many thanks to the astute and observant Diabetes In Control subscribers who pointed out some incorrect information in last week’s issue. In the title of the Item #2, Afrezza was described as a “Buccal Insulin.” Afrezza is not a buccal insulin. The only buccal insulin (which is not yet available in the U.S.) is Oral-lyn.
