Sulfonylureas Increase Risks of Death and Heart Failure: Sulfonylurea monotherapy for Type 2 diabetes was associated with increased risks of all-cause death and congestive heart failure compared with metformin, a large, retrospective study showed. Through a mean follow-up of 7.1 years, both first-generation and second-generation sulfonylureas were associated with elevated mortality risks. Second-generation drugs in that class were associated with an 18% higher risk of developing congestive heart failure. See this week’s Item #1.
