Steve and I have been working with Doctor of Pharmacy Candidates for the past 15 years, and each and every time we discuss diabetes with a new student, we talk about the incidence of diabetes and then we talk about the even higher incidence of prediabetes. I believe that at last count there are 3 times as many prediabetes patients as diabetes patients.

This concept has often driven a lot of us to work hard to educate our prediabetes patients with the caveat that if they start taking care of themselves now, they can prevent the progression to diabetes.

There are also a lot of programs for exercise and weight loss and lifestyle modifications that attempt to take advantage of this natural progression, but is it really true that prediabetes leads to diabetes, and that if you work hard you can prevent it, or is it all supposition?

This week our intern Laura Martínez López, PharmD. Candidate 2021, LECOM, College of Pharmacy, took what we said to heart and went looking for a definitive answer. She was able to find some interesting information that may change our concepts and how we approach these patients.
